Looking at all the Beatles and John Lennon songs, I’m reminded of the fact that Lennon mentioned the topic of sleep a few times. I’m Only Sleeping was on the Beatles’ Revolver album, though I first heard it on the US LP called Yesterday and Today. It starts off:
When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I’m still yawning
When I’m in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float upstream
Then, for the Beatles white album, Lennon writes:
I’m so tired, I haven’t slept a wink
I’m so tired, my mind is on the blink
The tone of the vicious Lennon attack on Paul McCartney, How Do You Sleep is contrasted with #9 Dream in my mind.
So long ago
Was it in a dream, was it just a dream?
I had known, yes I know
Seemed so very real, it seemed so real to me
1. How do YOU sleep at night?
2. Do you remember your dreams?
On those nights I sleep for six or seven hours straight, I tend not to remember my dreams. But on the nights I have a lot on my mind, I might sleep for four hours, then stay in bed, feeling that I had not slept at all the latter part of the time. But I know I have because the dreams are so vivid, it’s as though they were real.
Yes, I have had days like that. Tire but can’t sleep. Most of the time, I can and feel sleep deprived. Still a young-ing here…LOL
I just realized my response is way too personal, Roger, so I am emailing you. Great questions.
and so you did. thx, ADD
Because I am taking medication my dreams are very vivid. Last night I had this dream about an imaginary silent film star. Very strange.
It’s funny that you would ask this question as I have been thinking about writing a post about this subject. I imagined beginning it with something like “2:00am, 3:00am, 4:00am, a thin thread of thought weaves its way through my waking mind. “Did I lock the door? Is the garage door open? I didn’t mow the lawn like I said I would. I intended to write a blog post today. All those photographs on my computer that I have yet to edit. Where did the time go? I sit upright giving in to the realization that sleep is now futile. My body is tired but my mind has its own agenda.”
All this is to say that I don’t sleep through the night. This isn’t the normal human experience??
I can fall asleep pretty easily these days. But I’m lucky to get six hours straight. I’m usually awake an hour or so before my alarm goes off, and very rarely sleep until my alarm wakes me up.
As for dreams, I probably remember at most half a dozen a year. I used to remember my dreams more when I was younger.
Fitfully.
