E is for Ecology

Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), written and performed by Marvin Gaye, came out 40 years ago, but sounds like it could have been written 40 minutes ago.

Seriously, I have no energy to ‘debate’ the fact that global warming is occurring, and people are causing it. “The glaciers are melting and are a contributor to sea-level rise,” and “many communities won’t be able to adapt to rapid climate change.” The radical flooding in some parts of the planet and droughts in others are just a couple of reflections of the phenomenon.

The deniers, dangerously to my mind, downplay and distort the evidence of climate change, demand policies that allow industries to continue polluting, and attempt to undercut existing pollution standards.

This site provides over 25 easy steps we can take to not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also reduce air pollution, increase energy independence and save money.

We CAN reduce our ecological footprint.

Meanwhile, here’s Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), written and performed by Marvin Gaye. It came out 40 years ago, but check out the lyrics; it sounds like it could have been written 40 minutes ago. Here’s a cover version by The Strokes, Eddie Vedder & Josh Homme.

I'm a librarian. I hear music, even when it's not being played. I used to work at a comic book store, and it still informs my life. I won once on JEOPARDY! - ditto.

  1. As the old saying goes, “So much work, so little time.” Enjoyed the Marvin Gaye song, thanks for sharing it today.

  2. Seems like one can find reports and info to shore up either position on global warming. But, as caretakers of the earth, we do need to make sure we are making the best decisions possible, for everyone’s sake.

  3. Gee Roger, I’ve always loved that song (the melody) but never really “heard” the words! Thanks for this – we all need to do our part to keep our world from being destroyed.

  4. Excellent post and I’m also weary of debating what seems obvious to me. Global Warming is a man made disaster.

  5. Love the song, hadn’t heard it in a while!! A terrific post as always and like you and others, I too, as tired of debating the obvious. Of course, global warming is a man made disaster! How could you not see/understand that??? Hope you have a great week in spite of all the junky stuff!

  6. Agree – often we don’t “hear” the song/words/message until pointed in the right direction. Thanks Roger. Hope you are enjoying your vacation.

  7. Ecological thinking yes … but hrm … I think in another way about our temperature … 1880 – 2000 … 120 yrs ….
The debate seem to be too narrowminded in the whole – from both sides in my oppinion šŸ™‚
I like to have an oppinion and I know I am not always right šŸ˜‰

  8. It is festival season here and a lot is being done to promote eco-friendly Ganesha’s. No POP to be used but plain mud or clay is one of them!!

Enjoy is the E-word for you ROG on your vacation!! ….and stay entertained!! šŸ™‚

  9. The invention of “global warming” has filled mostly wallets of certain people ! Now we switched over to climate changing. Business is business.

  10. Most people won’t see the obvious until we have no water, no food and we die from breathing the air…just saying.

  11. Global warming? Climate change? Never heard of it. The important thing is, we can dump anything we want anywhere we want; we can spill oil everywhere; we can rev our Hummers at stop lights like they are CD players, and it doesn’t matter because JESUS IS COMING TO SAVE US SOON!!! I have it on good authority from my sister. Well, Jesus is not coming to save ME, just my sister and her family and people who go to her church. And He will have to cherry-pick which 144,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses, because there are more than that on earth. Talk about bad planning of a religious sect. I’m just sayin. So go ahead, fling those cig butts out the window. Hell, dump the whole ashtray in the parking lot. It’s cool. Jesus will save us!!

  12. Egads. Not much thinking going on out there – mostly just a spouting of sound bytes that fall from lazy minds. Excellent and timely post.

  13. I have no doubt that we are going to a pit sooner or later because we are all careless. But what I like to know is how much money was being donated and how much was being used to this purpose? ^_^ Happy Tuesday!

  14. I so agree with you Roger, the drastic changes in climate in any part of the world is a clear sign of phenomenon. It is scary.

  15. GREAT post! So much to think about. I love the 25 recommendations and I love how you point out that some songs can last forever.

  16. A great song, and agree that decreasing our ecological footprint is of the utmost importance, but I remember picking apricots in the orchard fifty years ago when it was 117 degrees F, and that was in the middle of a pretty warm cycle too…

  17. I think back to the 2004 tsunami and the public outrage afterwards that there was no warning system in place, even though the scientists had been asking for one. They had been ignored by all of us because such an event was considered a low-probability risk and the precautions too expensive.

There will always be climate change deniers. As Benjamin Franklin wrote: “Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other.”

  18. They’re spending millions of dollars on academic stuff alone to help sort out global warming. I enjoyed Mercy Mercy Me.

  19. Not sure I can think of anything much scarier than people who willfully twist or deny facts for their own short-sighted gain… and that applies to everything, including ecology. Enjoying this classic Marvin though… and doing my own bit to be part of the solution rather than the problem. My main vice in this regard is flying… what can I say… at least I am aware.

  20. Excellent post. My family and I are doing our little share in taking care of our planet. Have a nice day!

  21. A fantastic entry for E day! Love it!
it is such a nice thing to sensitize people about environment problems! Thanks Roger!
And the song is really a great song! Thanks for sharing;o)
