Seriously, I try to ignore the phenomenon that is Donald Trump. But I profess weakness; I am only human.
A friend posted the pic above, with a caption “From Robert Crumb’s strip in HUP comix from 10 or 15 years ago.” But a cursory search reveals that HUP comix #3 was actually from 1989, “featured his take on the ugliness of America (Donald Trump).”
This means that at least some folks realized the toxicity of one DJT over a quarter century ago.
And his father was equally reviled: Woody Guthrie, ‘Old Man Trump’ and a real estate empire’s racist foundations, and Woody Guthrie Loathed His Racist Landlord: Donald Trump’s Father.
The New York Daily News has been doing a series of front pages mocking the Donald, and to a lesser extent, Ted Cruz. Audiences are entertained, and the points I tend to agree with, for the most part. The endorsement of Trump by former Alaska governor Sarah Palin was odd theater.
See also the cartoon of Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty But is it journalism? I’d say not as I understand it.
Conservatives against Trump. If he IS the Republican nominee for President, know that the Clinton and Sanders campaigns have bookmarked this piece. Of course, National Review was booted from co-sponsoring the February 25 GOP debate for putting this out.
The Week says Donald Trump is hypnotizing the GOP. Literally. THAT would explain things, such as retweeting a white nationalist, with minimal consequence. Is it true, as he posits, that he could shoot somebody and not lose voters?
I’m now convinced that Donald J. Trump could be elected President this year, especially after reading Ruth Marcus on how much more dangerous Cruz is than Trump, an argument I hear by others. President Trump would cut deals, Cruz would not.
To Dustbury’s everlasting horror:
1. There exists Donald Trump fanfiction.
2. There exists sexually explicit Donald Trump fanfiction.
Man’s obituary: ‘In lieu of flowers, please do not vote for Donald Trump’.
Glad you got your website sorted out. I was getting that error message yesterday afternoon.
What would concerns me about Trump, and other ‘personality’ politicians come to that, is that it tends to devalue our faith in politics even more than it already is.
I like the ‘We Shall Overcomb’ slogan though 🙂
I am glad we don’t have to vote for a president. I suspect mr. Trump of racism and stupidity. He has lost a great deal of goodwill.
Thanks Roger for being so tolerant to me. I shall do my best. Every day I am getting better. My wrist is now without plaster and the wound is getting smaller.

While traveling in the Yucatan over the last two weeks I met eight Canadians, variously from B.C., Alberta, and Ontario, and when they found out that I was from the States they universally asked me,unsolicited and with obvious genuine concern “You’re NOT really going to elect Donald Trump, are you?!” Similar to their questions to me when I visited Montreal in 2009 while the Affordable Care Act, aka “Obamacare” was being argued about, they followed up with “What is WRONG with you people?! I advanced my opinion to them that something like a third of U.S. citizens are anti-intellectual, xenophobic theocratic racists in the Grand Old tradition of the Confederacy, and the Canadians thought that made sense.
Uthaclena – With regard to your last sentence, I believe the Canadians were simply being “polite” (as we famously are) and didn’t want to argue further. Just my humble opinion. Canadians are absolutely aghast that there is any remote chance of DJT being elected…if so, we just might build that fence for him on this side.
lesliebc – you may well be correct, I’ve always thought of you all as being civilized people (except for that baby seal thing). In fact, some friends and I have wondered if the New England states down thru New York might apply to become another Canadian province; I have the lyrics of “O Canada” hanging on my refrigerator door…
That Crumb story… it had two endings as i recall.
The obit had me in stitches. Great way to honor the memory of a friend!
I am somewhat at odds with Daily News covers, because it’s one thing to reframe a politician’s opinion as commentary (“Ford to NYC: Drop Dead”) but quite another to point THE finger, any finger, at a pol. Maybe it’s just me, and my mother is yelling from heaven, “Shut up! It’s Trump!” but I don’t think it sets a good tone for actual journalism.
Don’t generalize in speaking of citizens of ANY country, folks. Canadians are as diverse as Americans in a lot of ways!! My two cents. Amy
