My public school history books informed me that the Civil War was about “state’s rights.” One of my (minor) teenage acts of rebellion was to insist that the Civil War was basically about slavery. That the school system perpetuates this myth about State’s rights and it took an act of rebellion to dismiss it, even in upstate New York, shows why this myth is so pervasive.
