Wow, so many things here!
Am kind of out of the loop, because for 2 weeks we had the electrical power more off than on (fire prevention), so I missed out on some news items! Didn’t know about the mad-hatter:( My opinion about Eyore: in his depressed state he is still one who’s a little cute. I feel for him!
To answer your comment: even if one doesn’t not know anyone in San Diego, like we, we were there at least once a month, hanging out in the weekend, visiting our favorite places!
I knew about the pumpkin thing; my mom lives in Illinois, not too terribly far from the “Pumpkin Capital” where most of the squashes for canning are grown.
And I had a copy of Martin Gardner’s “The Annotated Alice” as a young teen, so I had heard the mad-hatter thing. I’ve even used it as an example in classes; mercury also acts as an enzyme competitive inhibitor. Also, Minimata, Japan had a fairly horrific history of neurologic disease caused by mercury poisoning…methyl mercury in a chemical company’s wastewater.
And I always liked Eeyore. I read somewhere that small children sometimes like “sad” characters in books because they think maybe they can cheer the character up. I liked Eeyore best of the Pooh characters when I was a kid and he’s still my favorite. (I used to be dispositionally more of a Tigger, but as I’ve gotten older and more battered by life, I’ve definitely become more of an Eeyore)
