Beatles Island Songs, 93-84

“Our listening experience…is now threatened by the digital cherry picking and the rise of the iPod shuffle.”

The JEOPARDY! answers (questions at the end)
THE BEATLES $200: “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”, this song was the Beatles’ 2nd No. 1 hit in the U.S. after “I Want to Hold Your Hand”
THE BEATLES $300: This 1964 hit begins “Well she was just seventeen – you know what I mean?”
THE BEATLES $400: This 1964 film, the Beatles’ first, received an Oscar nomination for its musical score.

Klaus Voormann Nominated for Grammy® Award for VOORMANN & FRIENDS – A SIDEMAN’S JOURNEY DELUXE PACKAGE. The Album and DVD include his longtime friends Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. “Double Grammy® winner Klaus Voormann not only left his mark on musical history as a bass player (winning the Grammy® performing on the 1972 album The Concert for Bangladesh) but has also set some milestones as a graphic designer with his Grammy® award for designing the Beatles’ Revolver cover in 1966. That was the first time anyone had won for a graphic album cover.”

93 Yer Blues from the white album. A pretty straight Lennon blues, made interesting by the middle section’s rocking feel.
92 You’re Going to Lose That Girl from Help! My – that album contains a lot of a sense of loss. A Lennon tune.
91 Hey Jude, A-side of single (UK), Hey Jude album (US). OK, I have tired of those singalong tunes where the audience carries the weight of the vocal, and McCartney, in concert, milks this a lot. Still, it’s a great song that Paul wrote for Julian Lennon when Julian’s dad left his mom. And it was damn gusty to release, as the first Beatles Apple single, a seven-minute song.
90 Piggies from the white album. Yeah, it’s snarky and overbearing Harrison, yet it seems oddly still relevant.
89 She Came in Through the Bathroom Window from Abbey Road. A McCartney contribution to the medley. Not incidentally, there was an article from the Telegraph called Take a good album apart? Don’t be ridiculous – Our listening experience is dictated by technology, which is bad news for the album.Basically, it says: “Our listening experience…is now threatened by the digital cherry-picking and the rise of the iPod shuffle.” I totally agree. Still, making this list, it was the iTunes model that in part drove my selections.
88 Act Naturally from Help! (US), Yesterday and Today (US). Ringo was considered the breakout star of the movie A Hard Day’s Night, which made him the center of the second film, Help! So it seems appropriate that Ringo perform this song made famous by Buck Owens; the two even performed it together years later.
87 Sexy Sadie from the white album. Lennon’s disillusionment with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during the Beatles’ trip to India.
86 You Really Got a Hold on Me from With the Beatles (US), The Beatles’ Second Album (US). Lennon does his best Smokey Robinson; if not up to the Miracles original, still solid.
85 I’m So Tired from the white album. A Lennon song I can relate to.
84 Because from Abbey Road. Lennon’s backward Moonlight Sonata, with great vocals by Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison.

JEOPARDY! questions:
What was “She Loves You”?
What is “I Just Saw Her Standing There”?
What was A Hard Day’s Night?

ROCK ‘n ROLL Fridays: The Beatles

Find some way not to reward what I can only call intentional stupidity.

“We are like other memes in that we will ask you thirteen questions each and every Friday. But our little “twist” is that each week we will pick a singer, band, era or category and pick thirteen of their songs. Each of our questions will be based on the lyrics.

For the end of 2010, a double-length meme of the Beatles. As though I could resist.

1. HARD DAY’S NIGHT: “You know I work all day, to get you money, to buy you things, and it’s worth it just to hear you say, you’re gonna give me everything…”
Have you ever supported another person?

Well, my wife and I support our daughter. When Carol was in grad school, I was making the vast majority of the income, but now, as with about a fifth of mixed gender couples in the U.S., she makes more than I do.

2. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: “Nothing you can make that can’t be made. No one you can save that can’t be saved. Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time, it’s easy. All you need is love…”
What 3 things do you need besides love?

Water, food, music.

3. BACK IN THE USSR: “Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it’s great to be back home…”
What is the most unusual place you have visited?

Barbados, 1999. Don’t know that it was unusual as much as it was FAR AWAY.

4. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET?: “Listen, doo da doo, do you want to hear a secret? Do you promise not to tell?…”
What was the last secret you heard?

What a silly question.

5. DRIVE MY CAR: “Baby you can drive my car. Yes I’m gonna be a star. Baby you can drive my car and maybe I’ll love you…”
When was the last time you drove someone else’s car?

1987, I think. It was definitely when I was working at FantaCo.

6. EIGHT DAYS A WEEK: “I ain’t got nothing but love, babe. Eight days a week”…
What was the longest week of YOUR life?

First week of the daughter’s life – utter exhaustion.

7. GET BACK: “Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner, but he knew it couldn’t last. Jojo left his home in Tucson Arizona, for some California grass. Get back!Get Back! Get back to where you once belonged…”
Where do YOU belong?

A reasonable question. As Marvin Gaye sang, “Wherever I lay my hat, that’s my home.”

8. GOOD MORNING GOOD MORNING: “Everyone you see is half asleep, and you’re on your own you’re in the street…”
What is your morning routine?

I usually get up about 5:30 a.m. While my wife is in the shower, I am at the computer for about an hour, which consists of 1) checking my e-mail, 2) going to the blogs on my list, 3) writing something for my blog, ideally for several days in the future, as opposed to that morning. Then I get dressed, then make Lydia’s lunch while listening to the local news, especially the weather.

A lot depends on the daughter. If she gets up on her own, that could be anywhere from 6 to 7, and if so, I need to occupy her; that could be a book or talk. If I get her up at 7, I get her breakfast, then her mother does her hair, then I take her upstairs to get dressed, make sure she goes to the bathroom, check to make sure her homework and lunch are in her backpack, then help her with her coat and walk her to school.

9. HELLO GOODBYE: “I don’t know why you say goodbye I say hello, hello, hello…”
Who was the last person you said goodbye to that you look forward to saying Hello to again?

Well, when I’m at work, it’s the folks at home. Since I’m home, it’s folks at work.

10. YESTERDAY: “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks as though they’re here to stay, oh I believe in yesterday…”
What was the best event of yesterday (the day before today)?

Reading a bunch of newspapers.

11. WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU: “We were talking about the space between us all and the people who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion…”
Spiritually, do you believe in the afterlife, reincarnation, or nothing at all?

I believe in the likelihood of an afterlife, but don’t think less of those who don’t.

12. WHEN I’M 64: When I get older losing my hair, many years from now…will you still be sending me a valentine, birthday greetings, bottle of wine?…”
What was your favorite age to be?

37; that’s when I went to library school.

13. WE CAN WORK IT OUT: “Try to see it my way, do I have to keep on talking till I can’t go on? While you see it your way, run the risk of knowing that our love will soon be gone, we can work it out…”
What is the most drastic thing you ever did to try to save a relationship/friendship?

Hitchhiked hundreds of miles.

14. THE NIGHT BEFORE: “We said our goodbyes the night before, Love was in your eyes the night before, Now today I find, you have changed your mind…treat me like you did the night before…”
Anything change drastically just overnight for you?

Always depends on my dreams. When I dream a lot that I can remember, it stimulates my imagination.

15. FOOL ON THE HILL: “But nobody wants to know him, they can see that he’s just a fool. And he never gives an answer but the fool on the hill sees the sun going down and the eyes in his head see the world going round…”
Were you ever teased or bullied in the past?

Sure, especially in second and sixth grades, oddly.

16. SHE’S A WOMAN: “My love don’t give me presents, I know that she’s no peasant. Only ever have to give me, love forever and forever, my love don’t give me presents…”
What was the last gift your significant lover gave to you?

For Christmas, a waffle maker, albums by Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen, and a Hess truck.

17. SEXY SADIE: “She came along to turn on everyone, sexy Sadie the greatest of them all, Sexy Sadie how did you know, the world was waiting just for you…”
What is sexy about your significant other?

She’s sexy when she’s spontaneous.

18. REVOLUTION: “You say you want a revolution, well you know, we’d all want to change the world…”
What would you change about the USA right now if you could (besides war)?

Find some way not to reward what I can only call intentional stupidity.

19. PENNY LANE: “Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes, there beneath the blue suburban skies…
Tell us about your favorite street. It doesn’t have to be the one you live on now…

Lombard Street in San Francisco.

20. PAPERBACK WRITER: “It’s a thousand pages give or take a few, I’ll be writing more in a week or two. I can make it longer if you like the style, I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer….”
What would your book be about if someone advanced you money to write one?

A roman a clef about people in choirs.

21. NOWHERE MAN: “He’s a real nowhere man, sitting in his nowhere land, making all his nowhere plans for nobody..”
Who do you feel is clue-less?

Only one? OK, Michele Bachmann.

22. NORWEGIAN WOOD: “She showed me her room, isn’t it good Norwegian wood?”
What piece of artwork or furniture are you most proud of?

A piece my late friend Raoul made a VERY large birthday card.

23. MICHELLE: “I love you I love you I love you, that’s all I want to say, until I find a way, I will say the only words I know that you’ll understand…
Have you ever dated a non-US-born person? (If you are from another country, have you dated anyone outside your borders?)

No.

24. MAXWELL’S SILVER HAMMER: “Bang Bang Maxwell’s silver hammer came down on her head, bang bang Maxwell’s silver hammer made sure that she was dead…”
How would you like to die if given a choice?

In my sleep.

25. MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: “Roll up for the mystery tour. The magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away, waiting to take you away take you today…”
What was the last tour you went on?

Last fall, my wife, daughter, and parents-in-law took a train ride.

26. LADY MADONNA: “Lady Madonna baby at your breast, wonders how you manage to beat the rest…”
How do you feel about public breastfeeding?

It’s fine. There is an ad campaign around here supporting breastfeeding.

Beatles Island Songs, 103-94

OK, a schmaltzy song from Lennon, sung by Starkey, but for over a year, I sang it to my daughter to get her to sleep.

JEOPARDY! answers. Questions at the end.

FAMOUS WOMEN $200: After taking up with John Lennon, she became known as “The Woman Who Broke Up the Beatles”
NONFICTION $400: Vincent Bugliosi took the title of this 1974 book about the Manson murders from a Beatles song
INVENTIONS $200: Name shared by a Beatles album title & an 1835 invention of Samuel Colt

103 Words of Love from Beatles for Sale (US), Beatles VI (US). My sisters, neighbor, and I used to lipsynch to this album and charge the neighbor kids a nickel each to watch. I was Lennon and sister Leslie was McCartney. Listened to this Buddy Holly cover a lot.
102 She’s a Woman from the B-side to I Feel Fine (UK), Beatles ’65 (US). A jaunty McCartney tune.
101 I Will from the white album. A lovely McCartney tune, but I always thought it needed to be longer than 1:42, as most of the covers (Ben Taylor, Alison Krauss) are.
100 Paperback Writer, A-side of single (UK), Hey Jude album (US). Not sure that I really liked this song all that much on the first listen, but it grew on me, especially the opening riff.
99 Yellow Submarine from Revolver.  This, b/w Eleanor Rigby, was possibly the first single I ever purchased. And then the album came out, and I was mystified that the response vocal in the last verse started one line later on the album than the single – no, I’m not crazy – confirmed finally on one of those Anthology singles. I like this McCartney song, performed by Starkey, though I’m not convinced that, tone-wise, it belongs on the album.
98 I Need You from Help! In the 1980s, my favorite local radio station had something called Fourplay, four songs related by a theme. I found four songs called “I Need You” – this Harrison song, an obscure Who tune, the ones by America, and I think, Joan Armatrading. Or maybe it was Paul Carrack. They went together surprisingly well.
97 Please Please Me from Please Please Me (UK), Introducing the Beatles/The Early Beatles. About a perfect early pop tune from Lennon.
96 Good Night from the white album. OK, a schmaltzy song, with sappy strings, from Lennon, sung by Starkey, but for over a year, I sang it to my daughter to get her to sleep.
95 Dear Prudence from the white album. Lennon’s song about Mia Farrow’s sister in India. I like that it’s of a specific time and place.
94 Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. From circus posters Lennon saw. A fun, psychedelic cut.

JEOPARDY! questions:
Who was Yoko Ono? (But I don’t buy the charge.)
What was “Helter Skelter”?
What is Revolver?

Beatles Island Songs, 113-104

Paul played the drums.

JEOPARDY! answers-
SONGS OF THE ’60S $400: The Beatles’ 8th No. 1 hit, it begins “I think I’m gonna be sad”
MUSIC $600: 42 members of the London Symphony are heard in “A Day In The Life” on this Beatles album
“LONG” SONGS $100: Phil Spector overdubbed this last number-one Beatles hit

Did the Beatles appear in Albany movie theaters BEFORE “A Hard Day’s Night”? Yes, they did…
And that concert film, also starring the Beach Boys and Lesley Gore, will be shown again in Los Angeles on February 11, 2011.

The rules of engagement

113 Long Tall Sally from EP release (UK), Beatles’ Second Album (US). McCartney doing his best Little Richard impression.
112 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The trouble with the segued songs is that they don’t feel as complete. I like it well enough.
111 I Call Your Name from EP release (UK), Beatles’ Second Album (US). This was first released, I believe, by Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, then done pretty much as a throwaway by Lennon, but works for me.
110 Bad Boy from Beatles VI (US). Yet another Larry Williams song, covered by Lennon. How is it that this song was released in the US but not in the UK until a collection of oldies came out after the fact? That’s what ranks this over Dizzy Miss Lizzie.
109 The Ballad of John and Yoko from A-side of the single. The story song by Lennon, banned on some stations for the repeated use of the word “Christ”, and featuring only John and Paul, who played the drums, among other things.
108 Good Day Sunshine from Revolver. The song sounds like a stroll. The daughter has taken to singing the chorus, and I’m not sure she heard the McCartney song from me.
107 Baby, It’s You from Please Please Me (UK), Introducing the Beatles/The Early Beatles (US). The oft-covered Shirelles song by Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Luther Dixon has a nice Lennon vocal. The BBC version of this song charted in the UK three decades later.
106 All I’ve Got to Do from With the Beatles (UK), Meet the Beatles (US). Like this from the first strummed chord.
105 I’ll Get You from the B-side of She Loves You (UK), The Beatles’ Second Album (US). Nice early Lennon and McCartney.
104 Lovely Rita from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Cheerful McCartney tune which made me rethink meter maids. But my favorite part is the darker outro.

What is “Ticket To Ride”
What is Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
What is “The Long and Winding Road”; re: the latter, the original clue also said, “John and Paul’s original version is not for sale”, but this is no longer true, thanks to the release of Let It Be…Naked.

The Quick 2010 Fandom Meme

“If St Elsewhere exists only within Tommy Westphall’s mind, then so does every other series set within the same fictional sphere.”

Since I’ve found myself unable to create any Best Of for the year, I guess I’ll force myself to do this meme from Sunday Stealing instead. Only requires one response per question required.

1. Your main fandom of the year: tossup between the perennial Beatles and visiting the folks at ABC Wednesday.

2. Your favorite Film this year: The King’s Speech, though I was mighty fond of Toy Story 3. And BTW, I went with my wife, not my daughter; the conveyor belt scene would have freaked her out, I’m guessing.

3. Your favorite Book read this year: well, haven’t read it as such, but I am thoroughly picking out stories and descriptions from Finishing the Hat by Stephen Sondheim.

4. Your favorite Album or Song this year: probably National Ransom by Elvis Costello.

5. Your favorite meme site of the year: other than ABC Wednesday, that’d be Rock ‘n’ Roll Fridays, I guess.

6. Your Fandom that you haven’t tried Yet, but want to: not applicable

7. Your best new Fandom Discovery of the Year: also n/a

8. Your biggest Fandom Disappointment of the Year: too many 3-D movies that don’t warrant the technology, and the added ticket price. Ken Levine talked about this recently, and Roger Ebert is virulently anti-3D.

9. Your TV Boyfriend of the year: n/a

10. Your TV Girlfriend of the year: I suppose it’s Lauren Graham, whose presence in the show Parenthood got me to watch it occasionally.

11. Your most Missed Old Fandom: don’t know if I miss it as much as it has nostalgic resonance, but a lot of online fandom was stuff that USED to happen by mail. I did a little of that re the BEATLES maybe 20 years ago.

12. Your Biggest Anticipations of the New Year: that 3-D movies as a selling point will crash and burn.

13. Your favorite post (of yours) of the year: difficult to choose. Probably an ABC Wednesday post. I’ll pick L is for Loving Day because it generated lots of comments.

14.Your favorite new blog (to you) of the year: Peripheral Perceptions. Don’t always agree with Lisa, but I do respect her opinion.

15.Your favorite new website of the year: Well, it’s new to me – Tommy Westphall’s Mind: “If St Elsewhere exists only within Tommy Westphall’s mind, then so does every other series set within the same fictional sphere.”

16. Your favorite news story of the year: the Chilean miners’ rescue.

17. Your favorite actor of the year: Colin Firth. I liked him in the last two movies I’ve seen him in, The King’s Speech and A Single Man.

18. Your favorite drama TV show of the year: Based on the time from recording to the time I watch it, it must be The Closer.

19. Your favorite comedy TV Show this year: Using the same criterion, Modern Family.

20. Your favorite cartoon of the year: Pearls Before Swine newspaper strip.
